Come and enjoy a weekend away on our incredible horse trekking camps!
We are located only 15km East from Wanganui at 639 Waikupa Rd, Okoia, in a quiet location with a beautiful rural outlook, stunning sunsets with Mt Taranaki in the distance and of course lots of horses!
During the camp we will be riding around the surrounding farmland, with wonderful views including mountains, native bush, the sea and plenty of beautiful valleys and plateaus. You can bring your own horse or hire one of ours. Our horses are quiet, sensible mounts, used to doing these treks.
Previous campers have really enjoyed meeting and making new friends with some like minded, horse loving people. All meals will be provided and are delicious home cooked food with as much fresh ingredients straight from the farm and garden as possible. BYO alcoholic/non alcoholic beverages and one thing to add to a grazing platter on Saturday afternoon. Each night after dinner we have some games or a campfire or spa or just hang out and chat.
Accommodation is in our home. We have two bunkrooms with two king single, comfortable bunks in each room, one queen bedroom, and a second extra large bedroom with a queen bed and mattresses on the floor, and one outside powered cabin with a queen bed, single bunk and a fold out sofa bed. Beds are made up with sheets, duvet, and extra blanket and pillow. Or you can provide your own accommodation and stay in a tent or your float if you prefer for $30 less, you can still use the bathroom facilities in the house.
Arrive on day one of camp anytime from 4.30pm, with dinner being the first meal at around 7pm. On the last day, camp finishes after lunch around 2pm.
We will ride whatever the weather. If it rains to the point of being unrideable, campers can watch Zane work on the horses he is starting, teach people how to worm a horse, do ground work or whatever interests people. Whatever we get up to, its guaranteed to be lots of fun. Many people enjoy it so much they keep coming back to more camps.
2 Day Camp: Saturdays 5 hour trek will be at a walk, mostly on tracks, on hilly terrain with a few technical spots, no riding experience needed but not recommended for people that are very anxious , or unfit/not used to riding. The ride on Sunday is approximately 2-3 hours. We split into two groups to head out to muster in the cattle, a walking group and a trot and canter group. Once mustered, we teach you how to do team penning. (Team penning is a timed Western equestrian sport where a team of three riders on horseback must separate three specific numbered cattle from a herd and move them into a pen within a 90 second time limit.) Sounds tricky but its really fun and all riding levels have enjoyed having a go. At this point if you don’t want to ride anymore you can head back to lunch, or you can take the cattle back to their paddock and then grab some lunch before you head home.
3 Day Camp: Same as the 2 day camp but with another 4-5 hour farm ride over some different farms.
4 Day Camp: A mix of farm treks, cowboy challenge obstacle practice and mock challenge, ground work clinic, some games on horseback, learn how to crack a whip and throw a lasso, a cattle muster and team penning.
Family Camp: Family Camp is for Mums or Dads to bring their kids to, Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles who ride are welcome also. Campers must be able to ride a horse off the lead (ie no beginner riders) and minimum age is 8 years. Includes farm treks, blindfolded Burma trail, archery, air rifles, cooking dinner over a campfire you light with a flint and steel, and games.

Cost: We are a third of the price of other NZ multiday treks, but just as good, with the only real difference being our accommodation is in our home and a shared bathrooms situation. People that have been to our camp love the horses, the scenery, the home, the friendships and fun had and the food! Some have been 2 or 3 times, some even more!
